Genesis 1:28 – The Blessing To Fill
“God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”
The Woman Who Stopped Shrinking
She was taught to be small. Not in words. In every unspoken message. Don’t take up too much space. Don’t be too loud. Don’t ask for too much. Don’t want too much. Be grateful for what you have. Don’t rock the boat.
She learned to shrink before she learned to speak.
Then one day she read Genesis 1:28. Not the way they taught her. The way it actually reads.
“God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”
Not “be humble.” Not “stay small.” Not “wait your turn.”
Fill. Subdue. Rule.
She realized she had been interpreting “sinful” as “existing.” She had been calling her own presence a problem. She had been apologizing for taking up space while the system took everything.
That day, she stopped shrinking.
The Decoding
“God blessed them.” Not “God hoped for them.” Not “God tolerated them.” Blessed. With intention. With power. With purpose. The blessing came before the command. You are not earning the right to exist. You were blessed before you did anything.
“Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth.” Not stay small. Not hide. Not hoard. Fill. The system wants you contained. Controllable. Quiet. The command is the opposite. Take up space. Multiply. Be abundant.
“Subdue it.” Not destroy. Not exploit. Bring order to chaos. Cultivate. Steward. The earth was not a finished product. You were put here to tend it, shape it, draw out its potential. Subdue the chaos, not the creation.
“Rule over…” Not as tyrants. As image-bearers. As those who answer to the One whose image they bear. Rule means responsibility. Rule means care. Rule means you are not a visitor. You are a steward. And stewards act like they own the place — because they are trusted to.
What They Taught You Instead
They taught you that “subdue” meant dominate. That “rule” meant exploit. That “fill the earth” was a command to reproduce, not to create.
They turned a blessing into a burden. A commission into a guilt trip.
They wanted you passive. Compliant. Waiting for permission. Because a passive person does not challenge the system. A compliant person does not build doors. A waiting person does not take up space.
But the text says something else. It says: You are blessed. Now act like it. Fill. Subdue. Rule.
Not over people. Over the earth. Over the chaos. Over the forces that would keep you small.
The Question This Verse Asks You
Where have you been shrinking when you were meant to fill?
Not where have you been greedy. Where have you been absent? Where have you been silent? Where have you been waiting for permission to exist?
The system wants you to ask “Am I taking up too much space?” The text asks: “Why are you taking up so little?”
What This Verse Means For You
If you have been taught that your presence is a problem, this verse is your release. If you have been waiting for someone to give you permission, this verse is your command. If you have been apologizing for existing, this verse is your blessing.
You are not too much. You are not too loud. You are not too ambitious. You are not too demanding.
You are blessed. Now fill.
The Prayer Card
Leave A Zap
If this article landed. If it helped you see the pattern. If you have been shrinking when you were meant to fill.
Leave a zap.
A zap is not a donation. It is a signal. It says: “I was here. I saw this. It mattered. Someone else should see it too.”
It moves you from spectator to participant. From nodding along to acting.
Your zap tells me I am not screaming into the void. It helps me keep building. And it tells the that this truth should not be buried.
The Door
The system wants you small. The text wants you full.
You have a choice. Keep apologizing for existing. Or take up the space you were blessed to fill.
Not to dominate. To steward. Not to exploit. To tend. Not to prove. To be.
You are blessed. Now act like it.
Where have you been shrinking when you were meant to fill?
