New LDS lawsuit focuses on sexual abuse in Mormon Church

Dolman Law Group has filed a bombshell LDS Church lawsuit against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) after it allegedly protected a convicted pedophile, hid his crimes, and then proceeded to give him free unsupervised access to young children for years. This is one of the most egregious LDS Church lawsuits to be filed in years.

The case was covered by FOX 13 Seattle after Dolman Law Group filed the Mormon sex abuse lawsuit in King County, Washington. Our lawsuit states that LDS church leaders knew David Herget was already a convicted child rapist, but ignored the safety of children and allowed him to hold positions of trust and authority in the Mountlake Ward of the Mormon Church. The Mormon Church allowed a convicted pedophile to remain in positions of authority over children.

The lawsuit details how the church empowered David Herget to be around children; one might even say they encouraged it. He was asked to dress as Santa Claus during Christmas and allowed to interact with young boys, even to the point of having young boys from the LDS church over to his home without any other adults present.

Of course, this gave David Herget the opportunity to prey on vulnerable children, and so he did. The LDS Church lawsuit filed by Dolman Law Group details the horrific abuse of the four plaintiffs in the case by the so-called “high priest.”

Dolman Law Group is committed to getting justice for sexual abuse survivors and holding the LDS Church (and any other church, organization, or institution, for that matter) accountable for its role in this clearly preventable tragedy.

This lawsuit is not just about one case—it’s about forcing systemic change in the Church of Latter-Day Saints and all other churches to protect children from sexual predators who hide within trusted institutions. There is a clear pattern of church leaders giving known predators access to children in the name of keeping their church’s reputation pure.

Further, we are continuing to investigate the concealment of sexual abuse by the Church. We have learned the LDS Church utilizes a hotline for reporting sexual abuse. This hotline is allegedly staffed by members of a law firm associated with the Church whose members also belong to the Church. Further, the church allegedly hides behind both the attorney client privilege and priest penitent privilege to avoid disclosing information including the reporting of sexual abuse incidents within the church.

Ironically, this tactic has only had the opposite effect. However, whether these churches are willing to change or not, Dolman Law Group intends to get justice for each and every person who is sexually abused because of the cowardice of any church’s leadership.

0:00 of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is being accused of knowingly letting a convicted sex offender have access to children. A lawsuit against the church claims this led to the sexual exploitation of four young boys in the church’s Mount Lake Ward in Mount Lake Terrace. The suit claims that in 1993, David Herget admitted to raping a 13-year-old girl. After his conviction, attorneys with Anipal Weiss and the Dolman Law Group say church members advocated for his early release, which led to Herget to serving 180 days of a 7-year sentence. Before his 2001 release, the lawsuit claims Herget attended church services and was given a task that allowed him to have young boys come to his home. The suit alleges the church was aware of this. The church is also accused of allowing Herget to dress up as Santa Claus and have young members sit on his lap. The lawsuit goes on to say that between 2001 and 2005, Herett

0:51 abused and assaulted three young boys, including two brothers, one as young as 5 years old. A fourth child says he was also abused over four years. The lawsuit is seeking an undisclosed amount of money from the LDS church. Fox 13 News has reached out to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about this lawsuit.
