Dr. Ron Huggins talks about the Mormon Church’s Lawsuit against Sandra and Jerald Tanner.

In this clip from our interview, Dr. Huggins revealed that the chapter on the lawsuit in his biography on the Tanners (Lighthouse: Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Despised and Beloved Critics of Mormonism) was the most difficult chapter to write. He claims that the details of the lawsuit were the most straightforward evidences that the LDS Church wasn’t true.

0:00 if you want to know whether the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is of God the best proof that it isn’t is that lawsuit that I encountered never mind all the other research \[Music\] so here was the deal in comes the lawyers and they demand that that links are taken down or some material by two o’clock well they get them down by two o’clock so there goes their their uh their basic concern over the whole issue is that the Tanners were all of a sudden in compliance but they had intended to pursue anyway it looked like they were going after the Tanners with their millions and intended on getting them and what was it that they wanted taken down it was the church handbook of instruction a few pages and it was a dubious uh lawsuit uh there were other copies of it online they didn’t go after anybody else they distorted the truth to try and fake a sequence of when things were posted that was were completely false they took took advantage of the

1:20 the judge’s uh lack of knowledge of how computers work and how the internets work for example she had to ask well what’s a thumbnail you know she didn’t know even the most basic thing and so they just kept pursuing it and changing the definition of what uh what the plagiarism was and she was going on with that so that anyone who quotes a another document online where there’s been plagiarism is equally guilty and this decision they came up with was was uh horrifying and the whole nation’s watching because they’re thinking if if this if this succeeds you know the internet is gone freedom of speech what happens if I quote a footnote in a book they were asking this a legal experts at universities I quote a footnote in the book turns out that guy committed plagiarism and I had no idea but I’m equally guilty and it was so their intent to get the Tanners was so conspicuously wicked and uh that it was very very the reason it was hard for me to write was because

2:31 I had to try and describe it in a dispassionate way and another thing that was difficult it was that it this contributed significantly to probably shortening Gerald’s life and then the guys went on I think one of them one of the lawyers became one of the 70s may be still be I believe that’s the case and the other one’s still around and so it was uh you know I had to bite my tongue because I wanted to avoid anything that was snide or and I just wanted to describe it because the story itself is uh Sinister enough that a organization that presents itself as God’s true church on Earth that’s willing to support such tactics by its lawyers to me that was one of the if you want to know whether the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is of God the best proof that it isn’t is that lawsuit that I encountered never mind all the other research it was just a dirty lowdown um well see now I’m using the adjectives
