OpenAI Plans Major Overhaul of ChatGPT

OpenAI Plans Major Overhaul of ChatGPT OpenAI is preparing the largest redesign of ChatGPT since its debut, turning the chatbot into a tightly integrated “super app” with coding tools and AI agents as it seeks a clearer path to profits and a possible stock market listing.

Early reporting and strategy shift

Initial details of the overhaul emerged in a Financial Times report describing how OpenAI “plots biggest ChatGPT overhaul since launch,” framing the move as a way to push users toward higher‑margin products ahead of an expected IPO. The company, valued around $850 billion, is recasting ChatGPT from a general‑purpose chatbot into a central hub that routes users to paid offerings.

By March of this year, other outlets had noted that OpenAI was pivoting away from a sprawl of standalone tools – such as its video generator Sora – in favor of a single, more coherent flagship experience.

The ‘super app’ vision

On June 7, new reporting underscored that OpenAI “is still working on that ‘super app’,” confirming plans to roll out a revamped ChatGPT in the coming weeks. According to this account, the app will bundle coding tools and autonomous AI agents, turning ChatGPT into a gateway that nudges free users toward paid products like the Codex coding suite.

A senior OpenAI employee captured the internal mood by declaring, “Chat is dead,” signaling a belief that static text exchanges will give way to more proactive, task‑oriented agents. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform, described the goal as building a product “where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life, be it personally or at work.”

Competitive and market pressures

The overhaul is also a response to intensifying competition, particularly from Anthropic in the lucrative business market. By consolidating features into a single app and steering users toward subscriptions and enterprise tools, OpenAI hopes to move closer to profitability before any IPO, while redefining what ChatGPT is supposed to be in the process.
