Meta Rolls Out AI Business Agent Globally on WhatsApp
Meta Rolls Out AI Business Agent Globally on WhatsApp Meta is moving aggressively to turn WhatsApp from a simple messaging tool into a revenue-generating business platform, centering that effort on a new AI-powered customer support agent now rolling out worldwide.
Early testing and global launch
After nearly two years of trials with businesses in markets such as India and Mexico, Meta has made its customer support bot, now branded the Meta Business Agent, available globally within WhatsApp Business. The tool is designed to help small and medium-sized businesses treat WhatsApp as “workflow software,” handling routine interactions directly in chat.
The AI agent can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and hand off conversations to human staff when needed. Meta is also extending the bot to Instagram direct messages, further unifying its messaging ecosystem for business users.
Expanding capabilities across Meta’s apps
Beyond basic support, Meta is testing features that give businesses daily briefings of overnight chats and insights into customer interactions across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite. The company says it is working on capabilities such as market research, product feature highlighting, calendar management and integrations with external tools for competitive insight.
For larger enterprises, Meta is building a platform to create custom agents that connect to services like Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee, embedding AI more deeply into existing sales and support systems.
Business model and strategic stakes
To monetize the rollout, Meta plans to include the AI agent in certain tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, while charging large businesses based on token usage — a shift that could be “critical for WhatsApp,” which has relied on business messaging fees and click-to-WhatsApp ads so far.
The expansion reflects a broader corporate strategy: Meta is “bet[ting] on AI agents to unlock WhatsApp revenues,” seeking to turn its massive messaging user base into a more substantial business line as part of Mark Zuckerberg’s wider push into AI technologies.
