At the end of 2025, Meta acquired Limitless, a startup that built an AI pendant designed to clip onto clothing or hang as a necklace to record and transcribe conversations. Meta said the deal would help it “accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables,” signaling ambitions beyond its existing smart glasses line.

2026: Leaked memo reveals AI pendant plans

By May 2026, an internal Meta memo viewed by reporters indicated the company is now developing its own AI-powered pendant and plans to begin testing it within the next year. The device is expected to build directly on Limitless’s recording and transcription capabilities, effectively turning ambient conversation capture into an always-on AI input stream.

The same memo outlines two parallel initiatives: an expanded lineup of AI glasses and a new business subscription offering, “Wearables for Work,” aimed at positioning Meta’s hardware as productivity tools rather than consumer novelties.

Context: A risky category, a dominant player

Meta’s move comes despite a troubled track record for AI wearables. Earlier devices like Humane’s AI Pin and other AI pendants failed to attract users, hampered by limited utility, privacy worries, and heavy marketing that didn’t translate into adoption.

Yet Meta enters with advantages. It already dominates the smart glasses market, reportedly selling more than seven million Ray-Ban glasses in 2025 and capturing about 82% share, giving it an existing ecosystem into which a pendant could slot as a second form factor rather than a lone gadget in an unproven category.

Strategic stakes

Financially, the bet is significant: Reality Labs lost $4 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone, raising pressure on Meta to find sustainable revenue from wearables. The forthcoming AI pendant, expanded glasses, and enterprise-focused subscriptions are all aimed at turning experimental AI hardware into a viable business line.
