YouTube Rolls Out New AI-Powered Podcast Features for Premium Subscribers YouTube is sharpening its pitch to podcast listeners, rolling out a bundle of AI-powered tools to Premium subscribers as it tries to look less like a video site with podcasts and more like a serious podcast platform.

On May 28, YouTube announced new podcast-focused features for Premium users: an AI-powered recommendation tool, an “Auto speed” setting, and a new on-the-go listening mode. The company framed the update as part of its push to compete for podcast audiences as rivals like Netflix invest in video podcasts and audio-first services like Spotify and Apple Podcasts dominate traditional listening habits.

The AI recommendations expand YouTube’s existing “Ask Music” feature, which already lets Premium subscribers generate personalized stations and playlists. Now, listeners can ask for podcast suggestions based on genre, mood, activity, or shows they already enjoy, bringing podcast discovery into the same conversational search flow that music users have begun to adopt.

At the same time, YouTube is targeting how people actually listen. The new Auto speed feature dynamically speeds up or slows down playback depending on whether the conversation is slower or more information-dense, aiming to create a “more streamlined experience without sacrificing comprehension” and removing the need to constantly tweak playback speeds as hosts change pace.

The on-the-go mode shifts the interface to an audio-first layout with a still image instead of video, large simplified controls, and a chapter timeline, and can even pop up automatically if YouTube detects that a user is moving around. Tech coverage has described these changes as gradual but meaningful steps toward YouTube becoming “a real podcast app,” even as the features debut only for paying Android users, with iOS to follow.

YouTube says Premium users watched over 800 million hours of podcasts in April 2026, and that YouTube Podcasts has more than 1 billion monthly active users, underscoring why the company is investing in incremental upgrades to keep those listeners — and win over more.
