I/O 2026: Agents, generative UI, and mini‑apps

On May 19, at its developer conference, Google introduced an AI-powered interface that accepts text, images, files, video, and even open Chrome tabs, then “drops users into AI-generated interactive experiences, complete with custom visualisations, tools, and what Google is calling ‘information agents’ that monitor the web around the clock.” The update, described as “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago,” signals a full “reimagining” of how billions interact with Search.

CEO Sundar Pichai framed the shift publicly around Gemini 3.5 Flash, calling the new intelligent box “our biggest upgrade in 25 years” and highlighting “new information agents that work in the background.”

Strategic response to AI rivals

Axios characterizes the overhaul as Google “reinvent[ing] the product that made it one of the richest companies in history: search” in order to counter “an existential threat from AI chatbots.” By enabling longer, conversational queries and agents that handle recurring needs—such as standing alerts for concerts, shopping, or news—Google aims to “keep more users from drifting to standalone chatbots” and extend AI agents across YouTube, the Gemini app, and new wearable hardware.

The move marks a broader internet shift: from typing keywords into a box to delegating ongoing tasks to AI agents that continuously read and react to the web on users’ behalf.
