A quarter-century-old model declared over
At Google I/O 2026 on May 19, multiple outlets described the announcement as a break with the past. TechCrunch framed it starkly: “Google Search as you know it is over,” as the company shifts from ranked links to “AI-powered interactive experiences” with conversational answers and agents that act on users’ behalf. The Verge called it “Google Search is getting its biggest changes ever,” underscoring the scale of the move.
Soon after the keynote, Business Insider characterized the rollout as “Google Search is getting its biggest-ever AI makeover,” noting Google is pulling its various AI products closer together and rebuilding the iconic search box for the AI era.
The intelligent search box and Gemini 3.5 Flash
Coverage converged on one central feature: an “intelligent search box” that expands to handle longer, conversational queries and multiple input types, instead of forcing users to pick a mode upfront. The Next Web reported that the new interface, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, replaces the static white rectangle with an AI-driven field that can accept text, images, files, video and open Chrome tabs, then drop users into rich, AI-generated interactive experiences and tools.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai promoted the shift on X, saying “Gemini 3.5 Flash is transforming what you can do in Google Search with new agentic capabilities,” highlighting a “new intelligent AI-powered Search box, our biggest upgrade in 25 years — rolling out globally” and “new information agents that work in the background.”
Information agents and the broader impact
TechCrunch detailed how users will be able to create and manage multiple “information agents” that run 24/7, tracking market movements or monitoring the web and alerting users to changes — a far more powerful successor to 2003’s Google Alerts. A companion guide explained “How to use Google’s new information agents,” describing them as background monitors that proactively notify users about chosen topics.
The Next Web stressed that these agents, combined with AI-generated overviews and conversational “AI Mode,” mark “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago,” according to Google’s head of Search. But TechCrunch also warned that as users spend “even less time clicking the traditional blue links,” publishers across the web could see traffic fall further, signaling a new tension between Google’s AI ambitions and the open web ecosystem.
