Anthropic Acquires Developer Tools Startup Stainless Anthropic’s latest acquisition is reshaping a crucial layer of AI infrastructure, raising both strategic and competitive questions across the industry.

In 2022, New York–based Stainless was founded by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray to automate the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs), turning API specifications into production-ready libraries across languages like Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin. The tools quickly became popular because they automatically updated SDKs as APIs changed, eliminating labor‑intensive manual upkeep.

Over the next few years, Stainless’s platform became foundational for hundreds of companies generating SDKs, CLIs, and connectors that let developers and AI agents use APIs. Its technology was adopted by leading AI labs and infrastructure players, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Replicate, Runway, and Cloudflare, to power agents that connect to external software and act on users’ behalf.

Anthropic had quietly relied on Stainless from the “earliest days” of its API; every official Anthropic SDK was generated using Stainless’s software. By early 2026, Anthropic framed the broader context: the “frontier of AI is shifting from models that answer to agents that act—and agents are only as capable as the systems they can reach.”

On May 18, 2026, Anthropic formally announced it was acquiring Stainless, describing the startup as “a leader in SDKs and MCP server tooling” that would extend Claude’s ability to connect to data and tools. TechCrunch reported the deal would remove a key infrastructure supplier from rivals’ reach and noted prior reporting that talks valued the purchase at more than $300 million.

Post‑acquisition, Anthropic said it would wind down all hosted Stainless products, including its SDK generator, though existing customers retain full rights to their already‑generated SDKs. From Anthropic’s perspective, the move consolidates core agent connectivity technology inside the Claude platform; for competitors that depended on Stainless, it marks the loss of a shared, neutral tool that had quietly underpinned much of the AI agent ecosystem.
