Instead of a static results page, users are dropped into AI-generated interactive experiences built on the fly, complete with custom tools and visualizations.

Tech outlets framed this as a historic shift: one described it as Google “reinventing the product that made it one of the richest companies in history” in order to counter the threat from AI chatbots. Another declared flatly that “Google Search as you know it is over,” noting that the new experience is designed so people “spend even less time clicking the traditional blue links.”

Rise of “information agents”

Central to the overhaul are autonomous “information agents” that monitor the web continuously and alert users when something relevant changes — essentially a far more capable successor to Google Alerts. Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis called “agents in search” the “next step,” highlighting that frontier AI can now be deployed directly into “multibillion-dollar products.”

CEO Sundar Pichai promoted the same vision on X, saying Gemini 3.5 Flash is “transforming what you can do in Google Search” with a new intelligent search box and “new information agents that work in the background.” Internally, Google’s head of Search Liz Reid described the result as “AI search through and through” and “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago.”

Enthusiasm, unease, and alternatives

Early coverage emphasizes both ambition and risk. One outlet called the move Google Search’s “biggest-ever AI makeover,” as the company pulls its various AI products closer together around the new box. Another highlighted that the changes are “the biggest ever” for the platform, reshaping how billions interact with information.

But the same shift is already driving many users to look elsewhere. A TechCrunch guide argued that “Google isn’t really Google anymore,” pointing to the new AI Mode and agents as reasons some people are turning to alternative engines like DuckDuckGo and Kagi. Critics say Google’s AI Overviews rollout — including high-profile errors — has made users wary of having a chatbot front-end every search.

Publishers are even more alarmed. An analysis warned that Google’s AI answer engine is “bad news for the open web,” noting that zero-click searches now make up about 60% of queries and that search traffic to publishers fell 33% globally in the year to November 2025. SEO strategist Lily Ray predicted the shift would have a “devastating impact on the Internet,” as AI-generated answers replace visits to the sites that produce the underlying content.

With information agents set to launch more widely this summer, Google is betting that an AI-first search experience can outcompete standalone chatbots — even as it tests how far it can push that model without breaking the business of the open web.
