In October 2025, Spotify signaled it was developing “responsible AI products” with major labels including Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony, Warner, Merlin, and Believe, built around artist choice, fair compensation, and stronger fan connections. The UMG deal and new remix tool
On May 21, 2026, Spotify and UMG announced a licensing deal that will allow users to prompt AI-generated remixes and covers of songs on the service, delivered as a paid add-on for Premium subscribers. Participating artists can earn royalties on AI-generated tracks derived from their work, and they retain the right to opt out entirely.
Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström described the project’s foundation as “grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part,” positioning the feature as an answer to longstanding industry concerns about unlicensed AI training and usage.
Industry positioning and contrasting approaches
The agreement, unveiled around Spotify’s Investor Day, comes as competitors like Suno and Udio have faced major-label lawsuits over how their models were trained and used, with Spotify emphasizing that its AI tools are built through “upfront agreements, not by asking for forgiveness later.”
UMG chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge cast the initiative as a way to “support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters,” arguing that the “most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together.” Details such as pricing, launch date, and which UMG artists will participate remain undisclosed, leaving the industry to watch how artists and fans respond to this tightly licensed experiment in AI-powered creativity.
