Google AI Studio Now Lets Users Build Android Apps With Prompts
Google AI Studio Now Lets Users Build Android Apps With Prompts Google is turning Android app development into a prompt-driven task, betting that natural language will pull in a new wave of non-coders even as it raises fresh questions about app quality and control.
On May 19, 2026, at its I/O developer conference, Google unveiled new web-based AI tools in Google AI Studio that can generate native Android apps “in minutes,” shrinking a process that often takes weeks of setup and coding. The apps are built in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose and can tap hardware sensors like GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC, effectively bringing the AI coding boom “directly for Android app development.”
From launch, users can describe an idea in natural language, see it come to life in an embedded Android emulator in the browser, and then sideload it onto a phone via USB using the integrated Android Debug Bridge. The system is pitched as useful for everyone from seasoned developers prototyping quickly to “a new type of user: a non-technical creator,” with Google saying AI Studio “now lets anyone build Android apps in minutes.”
Early capabilities are deliberately constrained. Google says this “initial release” focuses on “personal utility” apps such as habit trackers, “hardware-enabled experiences” that use phone sensors, and “AI-powered experiences” relying on Gemini’s API. For now, AI-generated apps are meant for personal use; publishing even to “family and friends is still on the roadmap,” though AI Studio can already create the Play Console app record, package a bundle, and upload it to an internal testing track for further iteration.
Google stresses that easier creation will not mean looser oversight. “App quality continues to be a top priority to Google Play and we will not be changing any of our review processes and standards,” spokesperson Mia Carter said, adding that apps built with AI Studio “will still need to meet these strict quality and review standards on Google Play.” In parallel, the company is tying discovery into Gemini: users will be able to “use Gemini AI to find the apps they need” on Play and the web, and app recommendations are set to appear in Gemini queries in the coming weeks.
