Google Overhauls Search With AI ‘Information Agents’ Google is dismantling the familiar search bar-and-links experience, replacing it with an AI-driven layer of autonomous “information agents” and generative interfaces that aim to answer questions, build tools, and track the web on users’ behalf.
A quarter-century of search, upended
For 25 years, Google’s homepage centered on a simple box and a ranked page of results. At I/O 2026, multiple outlets described the new rollout as “Google Search is getting its biggest changes ever” and “its biggest-ever AI makeover.” TechCrunch framed it more starkly: “Google Search as you know it is over.”
On Tuesday’s stage, executives unveiled an “intelligent search box” powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, accepting text, images, files, video, and even open Chrome tabs, then dropping users into AI-generated interactive experiences instead of “ten blue links.” Google search chief Liz Reid has called this “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago.”
From answers to agents
Central to the overhaul are “information agents” that can monitor topics 24/7 and proactively alert users to changes, essentially a far more capable version of Google Alerts. A companion guide explains “how to use Google’s new information agents,” highlighting tools that let people create, customize, and manage multiple agents inside Search.
Users will also be able to create mini-apps in natural language via a new “generative UI,” turning complex, conversational queries into bespoke dashboards and workflows.
Company vision vs. ecosystem concerns
Google pitches the shift as harnessing Gemini 3.5 Flash to deliver “a new intelligent AI-powered Search box, our biggest upgrade in 25 years … [and] new information agents that work in the background,” CEO Sundar Pichai wrote on X. But TechCrunch warns the AI-centered experience “could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web” as people “spend even less time clicking the traditional blue links.”
As AI Overviews and conversational “AI Mode” already reach billions of users, the 2026 overhaul marks a decisive step away from search as a gateway to other sites and toward search as an ambient, agentic service.
