Amazon’s Alexa+ Gains AI-Powered Podcast Generation Feature Amazon is turning its voice assistant into a full-fledged media platform, rolling out an AI tool that can generate entire podcast episodes on demand and raising fresh questions about the future of journalism and audio creators.

Early announcement and rollout

On May 18, Amazon announced a major update to its upgraded assistant, Alexa+, introducing a feature called Alexa Podcasts that can “generate podcast episodes on demand.” The service began rolling out the same day to U.S. users.

Alexa Podcasts lets people ask for an episode on almost any topic; the system then researches the request, drafts an outline, and produces a show hosted by AI-generated voices. Users can tweak “the length, tone, and focus of the episode” before it’s created, and finished shows are delivered via Echo Show notifications and saved in the Alexa app for replay.

How the AI podcasts work

Amazon positions the feature as a shift from simple Q&A to a “personalized AI content creator,” using a pair of synthetic hosts who “break down the topic of your choice.” Examples shared by the company include episodes on “the history of the Roman Empire, new music, and expectations for the World Cup,” as well as “audio lessons about the Apollo missions” or hobby explainers like photography.

Unlike Google’s earlier NotebookLM, which generates podcast-style audio from user-provided documents, Alexa Podcasts does not require any uploads and instead “generat[es] content from its own research,” integrated into “more than 500 million Alexa-enabled devices worldwide.”

News licensing and industry concerns

A key element is Amazon’s licensing pipeline: Alexa+ can pull real-time information from over 200 publications, including the Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, Vox, Politico, Time, Forbes, and USA Today, plus hundreds of local outlets. Amazon says these deals are meant to bolster accuracy and reliability.

Publishers, however, worry the feature could erode direct relationships with audiences and reduce traffic and revenue as Alexa becomes an AI intermediary delivering their reporting without users ever visiting their sites. Creators and ethicists are also raising questions about automated voices, potential misinformation, and the impact on traditional podcast hosts.
