Anthropic Acquires Developer Tools Startup Stainless Anthropic’s latest acquisition is reshaping a crucial layer of AI infrastructure, turning a behind-the-scenes tools provider into a strategic asset while cutting off a widely used service from its biggest rivals.

Early collaboration and Stainless’s rise (2022–2025)

New York–based Stainless, founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, built software that converts API specifications into production-ready SDKs in languages including Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Go, and Java. Its platform automatically updated SDKs as APIs changed, eliminating the manual maintenance work that had made SDK management slow and error‑prone.

From the earliest days of Anthropic’s API, Stainless technology “powered the generation of every official Anthropic SDK,” the AI company later acknowledged, underscoring how deeply integrated the tools already were in the Claude ecosystem. Over time, hundreds of companies came to rely on Stainless for SDKs, CLIs, and connectors that let developers and AI agents use APIs.

Growing role in the AI agent ecosystem

As the industry shifted focus from passive models to active agents, Anthropic framed this as a transition from “models that answer to agents that act—and agents are only as capable as the systems they can reach.” Stainless’s SDK generator became particularly valuable to firms like Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Replicate, Runway, and Cloudflare, which needed reliable connections between AI agents and external software.

The acquisition and strategic break with competitors (May 2026)

On May 18, 2026, Anthropic formally announced it was acquiring Stainless, calling the startup “a leader in SDKs and MCP server tooling” and positioning the deal as a way “to extend that reach even further” for Claude-based agents. TechCrunch reported that the acquisition followed talks valuing Stainless at more than $300 million, though Anthropic did not disclose terms publicly.

Anthropic confirmed it will wind down all hosted Stainless products, including its SDK generator, effectively taking a “key infrastructure supplier out of the hands of Anthropic’s competitors.” Existing customers will retain and can modify the SDKs they have already generated, but going forward, Stainless’s tools will be exclusive to Anthropic’s platform.

From Anthropic’s perspective, integrating the Stainless team will “advance Claude’s ability to connect to data and tools,” strengthening its MCP-based agent ecosystem. For rival AI labs and cloud providers, however, the move removes a trusted, neutral SDK provider from the market just as competition for developer mindshare and agent connectivity is intensifying.
