I used to spend three hours a day on Twitter.

One year ago, I deleted my account.

Now I’m only on Nostr, and I spend maybe ten minutes a day scrolling.


The difference is extraordinary.


The noise is gone.


The manipulation is gone.


And when I leave, I don’t feel drained, I feel uplifted.

That’s when I realised something important:
the new system isn’t just technically superior. 
It’s psychologically healthier.

But the real question is this:
how do we help people transition?

Overnight we have received notices of some unusual requests to our infrastructure.

Over a short period of time many password reset emails had been requested from various residential proxies around the world. Our rate limiting protects against spamming attacks but requests got through to request password reset emails.

Many of the requests are likely for emails that had been included in some data breach or have been publicly exposed by their owner. Password request emails also have been requested for lightning addresses which falsely exposed the user’s email address. This had been a feature deployed to help users keep easy access to their accounts. But as many users post their lightning address on profiles like nostr this should not be exposed and a fix has been deployed immediately. Generally there should be no way to display a user’s email address. We have failed here. About 5500 password reset emails had been requested by the attacker.

We have not seen any abnormal related login activity and accounts are safe. People who got a password reset email can ignore the email.

As we have seen a general increase in attacks on user accounts trying to brute force logins with some emails from some data leaks we have fully disabled password logins and require all users to login with the one time token. This adds an another layer of security. Additionally we also offer the option to login with Google.

Nostr will forever fight a losing battle of user acquisition because the other places pull all the tricks to get people to stay as long as possible. Since this user base is virtuous and won’t go down that terrible path, we’ll always struggle against the massively addictive platforms with cemented walled gardens and network effects.

Only new and interesting use cases and approaches might work. Otherwise you’re limited to a tiny drip of disgruntled users who eventually come here.

Russell Napier is one of my favorite macro analysts that I’ve learned a lot from over the years. Had the chance to meet him at a dinner the other day and discuss macro with him.

Him and I often have similar macro views and a focus on the topic of fiscal dominance and the financial repression that follows. But an area of historic difference is that he has viewed Bitcoin as unlikely to win. He has viewed it as something that governments will ultimately not allow to function once the gloves come off and financial repression gets real from the major powers.

So I discussed that with him, since while I acknowledge that threat as being real, I think Bitcoin is a solid foundation to push back with. But in addition, I also highlighted Nostr, and decentralized comms and social media in general.

Back in the 1930s-1940s when the US banned gold ownership and implemented yield curve control (hard core financial repression), information moved slowly. A lot of information was one-directional. It was hard for people to coordinate with each other at large scales.

But social media changes the game entirely. People can meme about it in real time. Government and central bank social media accounts can get ratio’d. Maybe one day they’ll try to put a stop to that on centralized social media platforms, but that’s why the decentralized protocols are so important. The tools are simply much better today, making that type of smooth and coordinated financial repression harder to do since all of their reasons can be dissected and dunked on in real time.

    We just got a pretty major grant from a thing called Octant and the Ethereum Foundation to produce a documentary about the DOJ‘s case against Roman Storm.

    Probably gonna get lynched for this, but I think we need to talk.

    While we are grateful for every donation, over the past ~1.5 years we received noticably less donations in Bitcoin than we received in ETH, Zcash and Monero over the course of just a few months - while our main audience are bitcoiners.

    The only way I can explain this to myself is that there seems to be an issue with the general mentality of trying to keep your bitcoin to yourself, which results in a significant lack of support for others - and it makes me really sad.

    The way the Ethereum community is supporting the tornado cash developers is nothing short of extraordinary. Compare that to our support of Samourai, who collected a mere few 100k, while Roman Storm raised millions to fund his case.

    At the same time we end up wondering why most people in bitcoin are retarded orange tie maxis that treat BTC like just another stonk, and why its use as a tool for the people falls more and more behind in the global narrative.

    Its time we start taking better care of each other in this space, and I hope that next time one of us is criminally indicted, we support them with all that we have.

🛠️ Tools, Updates and Releases

1. Noscall - v0.1.0 - New tool

NosCall is a secure audio and video calling application built on the Nostr protocol, offering end-to-end encrypted communication with full cross-platform support. This first release introduces compatibility with NIP-100 clients like 0xchat, along with Bunker/Amber login support, call history management, voice and video calling features, and a contact list for seamless connection.

2. Nostr Ynstant Messenger - v2.16.39

Nostr Ynstant Messenger is a lightweight ephemeral and persistent chat client built on the Nostr protocol, integrating with Bitchat for anonymous and temporary messaging. This release introduces forward secrecy for disappearing private messages, which can be enabled from settings, and includes a hotfix to ensure messages are correctly routed to the right threads. This was the latest release and there were also some few more releases last week.

3. Primal Android App - 2.5.20

Primal Android App is Primal’s official Android application for Nostr, providing users with a full-featured interface for live streams, notifications, and content interaction. This release adds a replay button for streams, new notification settings for live streams and reply-to-reply messages, and improves the article content parser for images and notes. It also fixes issues with zap receipts, timestamps, stream rewinding, keyboard dismissal, player controls, and wallet display, while upgrading acinq libraries to resolve a 16KB issue on Google Play. This was the biggest release of the week and the latest release was 2.5.21.

1. Nostr Web Publisher (nw-publisher) - New Developer tool

Nostr Web Publisher (nw-publisher) is a full-featured command-line interface (CLI) tool for managing static websites on Nostr. It allows developers and creators to deploy sites as signed Nostr events, track versions, monitor relay status, synchronize content across multiple relays, and clean up outdated deployments, all through a single, streamlined interface. This tool empowers users to efficiently maintain decentralized websites while ensuring authenticity, version control, and smooth multi-relay operation.

2. Mostro CLI - v0.14.2

Mostro CLI is a command-line interface tool for Mostro, allowing users to view all new replaceable events from the Mostro platform. This release introduces automatic updates of child orders in the database to prevent errors in flow, a major cosmetic refactor that beautifies terminal output for better readability, and various bug fixes including corrections in the getdm command and GH Actions tests. Additional improvements include 78 new unit tests with documentation, clippy error fixes, race condition adjustments, and removal of OpenSSL dependency for cleaner builds, enhancing both usability and reliability.

3. Gitplaza - v0.16.0

GitPlaza is a desktop Nostr client specialized in managing git-related content. This release adds a dropdown for copying event IDs, rebroadcasting events, and viewing event JSON, displays information toasts, allows opening events directly from Nostr URIs, highlights code syntax in markdown, and increases event title size. It also stops banning relays on event mismatch and improves performance by showing loaded events immediately. The release removes the buggy “Show more/less” toggle to simplify the interface and improve reliability. This was the latest release and there was also the release of v0.15.0 last week.

Nosflare is a serverless Nostr relay designed for Cloudflare Workers, utilizing a Cloudflare D1 database and R2 Object Storage for scalable, decentralized message handling. This release includes hotfixes addressing a critical bug that could cause runaway durable object billing and fixes to event tags in the archival process, ensuring stable and efficient relay operation.
