Zap-powered feed

A Look at the infrastructure and Basic economy within Nostr
Zap-powered feed

🧩 First Principles Breakdown

  • Nostr → The open protocol (notes/events signed with keys, sent to relays).
  • Relays → Storage + transport nodes. They don’t verify “truth,” just accept/reject events based on their policies.
  • Zaps (NIP-57) → Lightning-powered “likes with sats.” They attach economic weight to social actions.

The synergy:

  • Nostr handles identity + messaging.
  • Relays handle distribution.
  • Zaps layer in economic incentives on top of attention.

Nostr + Relays + Zaps = Incentivized Communication Layer

  • Relays carry all the noise (good + bad).
  • Zaps let users express signal (what’s valuable).
  • Over time, posts/profiles/relays that attract zaps are ranked higher, while spammers starve.

Think of it as:

Nostr (identity + events)
+ Relays (distribution pipes)
+ Zaps (economic feedback)
= Censorship-resistant attention market

🎯 Practical Example

  1. You post a note on Nostr (kind:1).

  2. It propagates to relays (public or paid).

  3. Another user reads it and sends you a zap (say, 100 sats).

    • Technically: they send a Lightning payment to your LNURL/LUD-16.
    • The zap event (kind:9735) is broadcast to relays.
  4. Now:

    • Your post gains economic signal.
    • The relay log + zap receipt make it verifiable.
    • Clients (Damus, Amethyst) can sort/filter by zap volume.

  • Relays choose policies (some only accept paid posts, some require proof-of-work).
  • Zaps highlight useful/valued content.
  • Every zap is backed by sats → hard to fake.
  • Economic filters reduce spam at global scale.

Bottom line: Nostr + Relays give you speech and distribution. Adding Zaps gives you economics and prioritization. Together, they form a self-sustaining ecosystem where attention is priced, spam is disincentivized, and creators can earn directly.
