President Vučić Pens Op-Ed for Fox News Praising Donald Trump
President Vučić Pens Op-Ed for Fox News Praising Donald Trump Serbia’s president has thrown his lot in with Donald Trump, betting that affection for the former U.S. leader can remake Belgrade’s place between a skeptical Brussels and a restless Washington.
From NATO scars to Trump fandom
Aleksandar Vučić’s Fox News op‑ed lands against a dark backdrop: Serbia’s lingering trauma from the 1999 NATO bombing, led by the U.S., which he calls a time of “enormous suffering, destruction and national trauma.” Yet, he argues, Serbia has moved in an unexpected direction.
According to Vučić, Serbia is now “the only corner of Europe where affinity for the United States has increased in recent years,” despite its history of “deeply rooted suspicions” toward Washington. On his travels around the country, he claims to see something “extremely rare” in Europe: “unbending enthusiasm for the leadership of Donald Trump.”
Europe rolls its eyes, Belgrade opens its arms
Vučić sets Serbia sharply against the European mainstream. From “Brussels to Berlin,” he writes, a “worrying surge of disdain” has taken hold, with much of the European establishment viewing Trump’s “America First” philosophy with “a mixture of confusion and hostility.” Talk of “strategic autonomy,” he says, is just a polite way for Europe to distance itself from a Washington that “demands results, not rhetoric.”
Serbia, he insists, is doing the opposite: it “understands” Trump’s vision and “respects” American power, even while others “mock” it.
A Trumpian future, made in the Balkans?
Vučić portrays Trump as respectful and attentive, rejecting the “caricature” of him as a bully. He recalls White House meetings that stretched on for hours “after tough negotiations,” without his concerns being dismissed or patronized.
From there, Vučić pivots to a grand offer. Serbia’s relationship with the U.S., he argues, “can contribute to the stability of Europe,” and “the future of U.S.–European cooperation” need not emerge from the “stale corridors of the past,” but “awaits shaping in the heart of the Balkans.” Belgrade, he concludes, is ready: “Our doors are open, our economy is ready and the foundations for true partnership have already been laid” — and if Trump ever came to Belgrade, he would receive a reception “like never seen before.”
