A payment channel is like a tab between two people:
- Open the tab (lock BTC on-chain)
- Make unlimited payments back and forth (instant, no fees)
- Close the tab (settle final balance on-chain)
The Network Magic
You don’t need a direct channel with everyone. If Alice is connected to Bob, and Bob is connected to Carol, Alice can pay Carol through Bob. This is the Lightning Network.
Why It Matters
- Base layer Bitcoin: ~10 min confirmations, high fees during congestion
- Lightning: instant payments, near-zero fees, good for micropayments
